Daniel’s Trusted Fitness Equipment for Home Strength Training

"Strength isn’t built by chance — it’s built by discipline, consistency, and the right tools. Everything here is equipment I trust for physical training in the home: relatively inexpensive, simple, durable, and effective. No shortcuts. No gimmicks. Just tools that help you build the strength you need for the life you’re called to live."

I put this list together primarily for beginners or for people returning to fitness after a break. It's not a heavy-duty powerlifting gym setup; it's a relatively low-cost essentials list to get you going.  Everything here is hand-selected to help you build a strong, reliable home gym without overspending.

Sandbags for Real-World Strength Training (Most Affordable Option)

We use these sandbags every week with a morning workout group I started. We run cross-training style workouts, share a short devotional, and pray together before starting our day — and these bags hold up to everything we throw at them. They’re durable, affordable, and one of the cheapest ways to add real weight to your training. Just fill them with sand or dirt and get to work.

These sandbags come in a wide range of colors and sizes, so you can load them light or heavy depending on your goals. They’re simple, tough, and versatile — perfect for functional strength, conditioning, and “get it done” style training. If you want gear that matches the Rooted in Strength philosophy, this is it: no gimmicks, no excuses, and no complicated equipment. Just pick it up and get stronger.

Bowflex SelectTech 552 Adjustable Dumbbells (5–52 lbs) for Home Strength Training

I’ve used different versions of the Bowflex SelectTech dumbbells for over ten years, through multiple moves and travel. They’ve held up to everything. The weight range covers a wide range of lifts and workouts, making them a solid option for beginners to strong, experienced lifters. If I had to pick a negative, it’s that I prefer a knurled steel handle over the rubberized grip—but the price, durability, and convenience more than make up for it.

Captains of Crush Hand Grippers — The Gold Standard for Grip Strength

Grip strength is incredibly important, especially for responders and protectors, and it only gets more valuable as we age. Better grip strength improves shooting control, recoil management, endurance, and overall capability. These Captains of Crush grippers are the real deal—serious tools for building crushing strength and hand endurance.

If you already have a strong grip, you’ll probably want to start with the 0.5 or even the No. 1. If not, they offer multiple levels so you can build up safely over time. I’ve got pretty strong hands, and the No. 1 at 140 lbs has been my sweet spot for developing both strength and endurance for the past few years. Built with IronMind’s GR8 spring and knurled aircraft-grade aluminum handles, these things last forever and feel solid in the hand. If you want reliable, measurable progress in your grip strength, this is the tool.

REP Fitness Adjustable Bench — Compact, Durable Home Gym Bench

Don’t pinch too many pennies when you’re buying a bench. Even for dumbbell-only work, a solid, stable bench is essential for safety. I’ve owned some of the highest-end equipment, and REP Fitness has become one of the few affordable brands I actually trust. They consistently build strong, reliable gear, and this adjustable bench is a great fit for home gyms—whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been lifting for years.

This bench offers flat, incline, and decline positions, giving you real versatility for chest, shoulders, core, and full-body training. The frame is heavy-duty steel, the padding is firm and supportive, and the whole setup is built for long-term use. It folds up for compact storage, has wheels for easy movement, and delivers commercial-grade stability without taking up your entire garage. If you want a durable, trustworthy bench that supports serious training at home, this one checks every box.

NUOBELL Adjustable Dumbbells (5–80 lbs) — Premium Steel-Knurled Adjustable Set

These are the premium option in adjustable dumbbells, and they have those knurled steel handles that feel right in the hand. They're pricier than the other sets, but you’re paying for quality, durability, and the closest feel to solid dumbbells I've used in an adjustable system. If you like that real gym feedback when you train, these hit the mark.

NUOBELLs replace 32 individual dumbbells with a fast, one-twist adjustment that moves from 5 to 80 lbs in smooth 5-lb increments. That makes them highly versatile, whether you're just starting or you're an experienced lifter pushing heavy weights. The steel-knurled handles offer a secure, non-slip grip, and the whole system is compact enough for any home gym without giving up the stability you’d expect from commercial equipment. Backed by a 4-year manufacturer warranty, these are a premium, long-term investment for anyone serious about strength training. They also come in a black/OD option, which I'm always a sucker for.

REP Fitness PR-1100 Power Rack — Solid, Affordable, and Perfect for Home Gyms

This is a great rack to get started with. I built my first home gym around a similar REP model years ago. Eventually, I upgraded — mostly because I convinced myself I “outgrew” it — and if you stay consistent, you might do the same. But for anyone building a home setup, this rack is safe, solid, and packed with features for the price. Add this and a barbell and you’ve got everything you need to train hard at home.

The PR-1100 is rated for 700 lbs, built from strong 14-gauge steel, and doesn’t need to be anchored to the floor. It comes with J-cups, full-length safety bars, and an integrated multi-grip pull-up bar, allowing you to squat, press, pull, and perform hundreds of exercises in a compact footprint. Laser-cut numbered uprights, durable powder coating, and extended safeties make it a dependable option for both new and experienced lifters. If you want maximum functionality in a small, home-gym-friendly package, this rack is one of the best values out there.

CAP 300 lb Olympic Barbell Set — Best Budget Weight and Barbell Package

Even though fitness has been part of my life for a long time, it wasn’t until about six years ago that I really understood the benefits of having a barbell in my training. There’s just something about it. I use dumbbells more than anything, but I can’t go too long without some barbell work in my hands. It feels strong, simple, and honestly—pretty manly. (And womanly too, if you're female.) It’s awesome, and if you’re getting a power rack, you need a barbell to go with it.

I’ve bought this exact CAP 300 lb set multiple times over the years because I think it’s the best value out there for a barbell and plates. You get 255 lbs of cast-iron Olympic plates, a 7-foot black oxide bar, and spring collars. The bar has a 500 lb capacity and medium knurling, and the plates are solid, durable, and easy to load. If you click the link, it gives me a small commission—though depending on where you live, you may also find this same set cheaper at an Academy Sports. Either way, this setup is a great foundation for anyone starting or rebuilding a home gym.
